A Scottish-Italian family on Bold Street
The Italian Club opened in 2007, founded by Rosaria Crolla. The Crolla family trace their heritage to Picinisco, a village in the Apennines south of Rome, from where earlier generations emigrated to Scotland. The group has since grown to include The Italian Club Fish, further up Bold Street, and The Italian Club Bakery.
Bold Street was named after Jonas Bold, a sugar trader, banker and slave trader who became Mayor of Liverpool in 1802. The street was laid out for residences around 1780 on land associated with rope-making, the trade that gives the surrounding Ropewalks district its name: long, parallel streets allowed rope for sailing ships to be laid out during manufacture.
