The building

Five decades at the top of Bold Street

Café Tabac opened in 1974 and has traded on Bold Street ever since. For many years it was presided over by its first owner, Rita, remembered by the café for her hats, her breakfasts and her firm way with customers; the business has since passed down through her family.

Bold Street was named after Jonas Bold, a sugar trader, banker and slave trader who became Mayor of Liverpool in 1802. The street was laid out for residences around 1780 on land associated with rope-making, the trade that gives the surrounding Ropewalks district its name: long, parallel streets allowed rope for sailing ships to be laid out during manufacture.

The café stands near the upper end of the street, towards St Luke's Church, the 'bombed-out church' damaged during the Liverpool Blitz in 1941.
