The same ground, a different trade
Long before a building rose here, this was ground where fortunes moved on a handshake. In the open air of Exchange Flags, behind Liverpool's Town Hall, merchants and cotton brokers gathered daily to trade — reading samples by daylight and calling prices across the flagged square that gave the place its name.
Liverpool sat at the centre of a global cotton network. When the telegraph arrived, prices set in Liverpool could move markets in New York, Bremen and Bombay within the hour. In 1906 the cotton trade moved indoors, to the new Cotton Exchange on Old Hall Street.
The square was later enclosed by the Exchange Buildings, designed by Gunton and Gunton and begun in 1939. Their east block, Horton House, was completed in 1955 and named after Admiral Sir Max Horton; the complex, which also houses the wartime Western Approaches bunker beneath Walker House, is listed Grade II. It is from Horton House that Fogo de Chão now serves — the restaurant first opened here as Fazenda in 2013.
