Castle Street
Castle Street is one of the seven original streets of Liverpool, laid out after King John's charter of 1207. It ran from the river to the castle and market, and the site of Liverpool Castle lies at its southern end, now Derby Square.
The medieval street was so narrow that two carts could barely pass. It was widened in the 18th and 19th centuries and became lined with banks and insurance offices. One of the sanctuary stones that marked the old market boundary survives on the street. Castle Street contains seventeen Grade II listed buildings and one Grade I.
