Castle Street and the marine insurance building
Castle Street is one of the seven original streets laid out when King John founded the borough of Liverpool in 1207, running from the river to the castle and the market. It was so narrow that two carts could barely pass, and it was widened during the 18th and 19th centuries. The street was later home to several banks and now contains seventeen Grade II listed buildings and one Grade I.
Nos 3 and 5 Castle Street, within the restaurant's 3–7 address, form a Grade II listed office building of 1889 by the architects Grayson and Ould, first listed on 15 May 1974. Five storeys and an attic high, it is built of stone and brick with granite at ground level. A mosaic frieze over the first floor shows sailing ships and the inscription 'British & Foreign Marine Insurance Company Ltd'.
