Castle Street: one of Liverpool's seven original streets
Castle Street was one of the seven original streets of the medieval borough founded by King John in 1207, running from the river towards the castle and the market. It was once so narrow that two carts could barely pass, and it was widened substantially in the 18th and 19th centuries. One of the three Sanctuary Stones that marked the old market boundary survives on the street.
Long dominated by banks, Castle Street is now part of Liverpool's food quarter. Bacaro opened in June 2014 in a 2,500 sq ft unit of Equity & Law House, formerly a Blue Arrow office, fitted out with a long bar made from reclaimed Venetian wood.
