A Victorian bank at the head of Castle Street
Castle Street was one of the seven original streets of the medieval borough founded by King John in 1207. It runs from Water Street to Derby Square, where Liverpool Castle once stood, and was later home to several banks.
No. 1 Castle Street stands on the corner with Dale Street. It was built as a bank in the 1880s to designs by E. Salomons, in red brick above a stone and granite ground floor, and rises three storeys to a high balustraded parapet. On the canted corner bay is a semicircular iron balcony at first-floor level, and the Castle Street front has a double window framed by Composite pilasters and swags. The building was listed at Grade II on 14 March 1975.
