India Buildings, Water Street to Brunswick Street
India Buildings was built between 1924 and 1932 for Alfred Holt & Co, the shipping line behind the Blue Funnel Line, on the initiative of Sir Richard Durning Holt. The design, by Herbert J. Rowse and Arnold Thornely, was chosen by competition. It replaced an earlier India Building of the 1830s that had served as the company's headquarters.
The block mixed offices with a bank, a Post Office and an entrance to James Street underground station, and a shopping arcade ran through its centre from Water Street to Brunswick Street along the line of the former Chorley Street. Historic England notes it as a pioneering British example of a building following the American grid system of town planning.
The building was badly damaged by bombing in 1941 and was reconstructed under Rowse's supervision. It was first listed on 14 March 1975 and is now Grade II*.
