A Victorian banking hall
Halifax House was built around 1870 for the Union Bank, probably to designs by John Cunningham, and was later extended by G. E. Grayson. A plaque on the building records it as the first head office of the Liverpool Union Bank, 1835. It was listed at Grade II on 14 March 1975.
The stone building has three storeys and five bays. On Brunswick Street a central round-arched entrance and four large windows sit beneath Doric pilasters, with Corinthian-framed windows on the first floor and pedimented windows above. The late-19th-century banking hall inside has granite columns, enriched beams and a coved, domed skylight, and is reached through a coffered, tunnel-vaulted vestibule.
In a 2021 refurbishment the ornate ceiling was restored, including its gold leaf and Liver bird motifs.
