A banking hall on Water Street

The building at 7 Water Street and 3 Fenwick Street began as a bank built in 1896 to designs by Grayson and Ould. In 1934 the Water Street block was replaced to designs by Palmer and Holden. Historic England records later use by the National Westminster Bank and General Accident.

The granite Water Street front has three storeys and five symmetrical bays. A rusticated ground floor with round-arched windows sits on a polished red granite plinth, with giant fluted Doric columns above. The bronze doors carry decorative lion masks. The nine-bay Fenwick Street return has round-headed windows carved with Celtic interlace.

Inside, the banking hall has a segmental barrel vault over the central aisle, carried on engaged marble columns with acanthus capitals. The building was first listed on 14 March 1975.
