Bold Street: from ropewalk to food street
Bold Street was laid out from around 1780 on land previously used as a ropewalk, the long narrow strips where rope for sailing ships was made, and is named after Jonas Bold, a merchant and banker who became Mayor of Liverpool in 1802.
The street runs from the Lyceum at its lower end, near Liverpool Central, up to St Luke's Church, known locally as the "bombed-out church". Most of it is now pedestrianised and it is known for independent cafés, restaurants and shops.
