One of Liverpool's seven original streets
Castle Street is one of the seven streets of the medieval borough of Liverpool, which King John founded in 1207. It originally ran towards the town's castle and market place, and was widened in the 18th and 19th centuries as traffic increased.
In the Victorian period the street became a centre of banking and insurance, and it now contains seventeen Grade II listed buildings and one Grade I listed building. Heritage's immediate neighbours on the even-numbered side include No. 36, built in 1895 to designs by Grayson and Ould for Leyland and Bullin's Bank, and No. 42, formerly Victoria Chambers, of 1893, also by Grayson and Ould. Both are Grade II listed.
Many of the street's former banking halls now house restaurants and bars, and the street is pedestrianised.
