A taste of Recife's carnival on Hanover Street
Frevo takes its name from the music and dance of carnival in Recife and Olinda, in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Fast, brass-driven and danced with small coloured umbrellas, frevo was inscribed by UNESCO on its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012.
The café brings that northeastern Brazil to the kitchen: tapioca wraps made from cassava starch, crepioca, and cuscuz, the steamed corn dish eaten across the Nordeste, often served with calabresa sausage. Alongside them sit cheese bread, English breakfasts and vegan and vegetarian plates, with coffee from a local roaster.
Hanover Street runs from the shops of Liverpool ONE down towards the site of the Old Dock, the world's first commercial wet dock. Its lower end keeps some of the earliest surviving port warehouses in the city, Nos 24–30, already standing on Horwood's map of 1803 and now listed Grade II*.
