Church House: a seamen's mission on Hanover Street

Church House stands on the corner of Hanover Street and Paradise Street, its first six bays curving back into Paradise Street. It was designed by G. E. Grayson and built in 1885, partly for the Mersey Mission to Seamen, with a chapel and meeting rooms, and partly as a temperance hotel.

The building is of red and yellow brick with terracotta decoration over a blue brick base, three storeys plus attic in twelve bays. Historic England's list entry notes Dutch gables with long, narrow windows and fluted pilasters carrying obelisks, and paired round-headed windows on the second floor. It was listed at Grade II on 12 July 1966.
