A café on Liverpool's old ropewalk street
Bold Street was laid out for housing around 1780 and named after Jonas Bold, a sugar trader, banker and slave trader who became Mayor of Liverpool in 1802. Before the houses, the line of the street was a ropewalk more than 300 metres long, used to make and measure rope for sailing ships.
Merchant housing spread outwards from the docks in sequence: Hanover Street first, then Duke Street, then Bold Street. The street is closed at its upper end by the Church of St Luke, the 'bombed-out church', and at its lower end sits The Lyceum, home to Europe's first lending library, beside an entrance to Liverpool Central station.
Bold Street Coffee has traded at number 89 since 2010 and describes the site as its original café.
