A Georgian house on a merchants' street

Duke Street was first set out in the 1720s, lined with merchants' businesses and homes, often with living quarters above commercial premises, as trade grew after the opening of the Old Dock in 1709.

The Monro occupies 92–94 Duke Street, a late-18th-century building listed at Grade II on 14 March 1975. Historic England describes brick with stone dressings and a slate roof, three storeys of five to six bays, rusticated quoins at the corner, sash windows with glazing bars and a hipped roof with two chimneys; the Suffolk Street side has tripartite sashes and two blocked bays.

After closing in October 2023, the pub reopened on 8 August 2024 under the 1936 Pub Company, with restored features and a painting of the ship James Monro, after which it is named.
