The building

Duke Street and the Ropewalks

Duke Street was established in the 1720s, lined with merchants' businesses that had living quarters above. Its growth followed the opening of the Old Dock in 1709. The street lies in the Ropewalks district, named after the rope-making for shipping that dominated the area until the 19th century.

The street has several Grade II listed buildings, among them the Union News Room at No. 105, built in 1800, which in 1852 became Liverpool's first public library, and No. 118, the birthplace of the poet Felicia Hemans. John Bellingham, who assassinated Prime Minister Spencer Perceval in 1812, lived on Duke Street for part of his life.
