The Grapes
Mathew Street pub opposite the Cavern, where the Beatles drank
The Grapes is a pub at 25 Mathew Street in Liverpool's Cavern Quarter, opposite the site of the Cavern Club. Because the Cavern did not serve alcohol, the Beatles and other Merseybeat groups drank here, and a photograph of the early Beatles with Pete Best inside the pub is displayed on the wall.

Mathew Street and the Merseybeat years
Mathew Street was historically the centre of Liverpool's wholesale fruit and vegetable market, before it became known worldwide for the Cavern Club. The Grapes stands across the street from the Cavern.
The Cavern did not serve alcohol, so the Grapes became a regular drinking place for the Beatles and other Merseybeat groups, including Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Big Three, the Searchers and the Swinging Blue Jeans. A photograph of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best drinking in the pub, dated to 1961, hangs inside.
