Walkers' Art Nouveau answer to Robert Cain

The Crown, listed as the Crown Hotel, was built in 1905 for Peter Walker & Son, the Warrington brewers, on the corner of Lime Street and Skelhorne Street. The Historic England list entry describes an Art Nouveau building of brick and stucco with marble facing to the ground floor, three storeys and attic, bowed stucco bays and lunettes in elaborate architraves. Lettering on the Skelhorne Street return still reads 'Walkers Ales Warrington'.

CAMRA's heritage survey notes that the building was an expensive commission, seen as Walkers' response to the lavish pubs of their rival Robert Cain. The ground floor has two rooms: a front bar with a copper-fronted counter, ornate plasterwork and a ceramic fireplace, and a rear bar with panelling and high-relief plasterwork. A winding staircase rises beneath a glazed dome to a former billiard room with stained glass.

The Crown was listed Grade II on 14 March 1975, the list entry noting its richly moulded coffered ceilings, original bars and engraved glass. CAMRA rates the interior three stars on its National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
