Opposite Exchange Station
The Railway takes its name from Liverpool Exchange station opposite. The station opened in May 1850 as a joint venture of two railway companies and closed in April 1977. Its frontage survives and was converted into the Mercury Court offices, and Moorfields station now serves the area.
Tithebarn Street was originally called Moor Street. It was renamed after a tithe barn built in 1523 by Sir William Molyneux at the corner of Cheapside. The pub itself is a traditional Victorian house with ornate ceilings and wood panelling, and stands next to the Lion Tavern.
