The building

A hidden avenue between two of the medieval streets

Queen Avenue is a passage off Castle Street and Dale Street, two of the seven original streets of the borough founded by King John in 1207. Castle Street ran from Water Street to the site of Liverpool Castle, now Derby Square, and was once home to several banks.

The avenue is framed by listed buildings. At 6–10 Dale Street is a bank of 1839 by Samuel Rowland, built for the Royal Bank and listed at Grade II, with an entrance onto Queen Avenue. The Queen Insurance Building at 13 Castle Street dates from the 1880s and is also Grade II listed; its arched arcade entrance leads into Queen Avenue. On the avenue itself stands the Royal Insurance Building at 16–18 Queen Avenue, completed in 1839 to designs by Samuel Rowland. It is listed at Grade II* and was the Royal Insurance Company's head office until 1903.
