On the site of the Goree warehouses
Beetham Plaza, formerly Goree Piazza, occupies the site of two large eighteenth-century warehouses named after the island of Gorée off the west coast of Africa, a trading post in the transatlantic slave trade. The warehouses were demolished after the Second World War.
The square's centrepiece is the Piazza Fountain, designed by the Welsh sculptor Richard Huws in 1962–65 and erected in 1966–67. Its stainless-steel buckets tip and pour in sequence; it is Huws's only surviving water sculpture and was listed at Grade II in 2019 (NHLE 1463126).
The surrounding office building was converted to mixed use between 1997 and 2000, when the plaza was redesigned. The fountain was repainted in yellow, blue and dark grey in 2018.
