A carriage builders' palazzo on Hope Street
The restaurant occupies part of an 1860 building in the Venetian palazzo style on Hope Street. It was built for a London firm of coach and carriage builders, and during the conversion into a hotel a sign reading 'The London Carriage Works' was uncovered above the entrance, giving the restaurant its name. Part of the building was used as a police station in the 1970s.
The Hope Street Hotel, founded by Dave Brewitt and designed by architect Basia Chlebik, opened in 2004 with 48 bedrooms and has since grown to 149 rooms with a spa and event spaces.
Hope Street is named after the merchant William Hope (1751–1827). It was straightened in the 1790s, built up from around 1800, runs between Liverpool's two cathedrals and forms part of the Rodney Street conservation area. The Academy of Urbanism named it its Great Street in 2013.
