Mathew Street and Old Town Liverpool: The Beatles and Beyond

Mathew Street, home of the Cavern Club and the heart of Liverpool’s Beatles tourism, is just minutes from the Old Town. It represents a completely different chapter of the city’s story but shares the same dense historical fabric.

Mathew Street and the Cavern Club

The Cavern Club — where the Beatles performed 292 times between 1961 and 1963 — was on Mathew Street, a narrow lane that runs behind the Old Town between Whitechapel and Stanley Street. The current Cavern Club is a recreation (the original was demolished in 1973) but operates in approximately the same location and maintains the spirit of the original venue.

Beatles Heritage in Liverpool

Liverpool’s Beatles heritage extends well beyond Mathew Street. The Fab Four grew up in various parts of the city, and the areas of Woolton, Allerton and Penny Lane are all accessible on organised day tours. The Albert Dock’s Beatles Story museum provides a comprehensive overview of the group’s career for those who prefer a curated experience.

The Relationship with Old Town

Mathew Street’s relationship with the Old Town is geographical but also historical — the same dense urban fabric that produced the Old Town’s Georgian merchant culture also produced the working-class neighbourhoods that generated Liverpool’s extraordinary musical culture in the 1950s and 1960s. The city’s social richness comes from this combination.

Combining Both Visits

A comprehensive Liverpool experience combines the architectural and commercial history of the Old Town with the cultural and musical heritage of Mathew Street. The two are within easy walking distance — Old Town in the morning, Beatles heritage in the early afternoon, back to the Old Town for evening drinks.
