Albert Dock to Old Town Liverpool: How to Connect the Two Districts

The Albert Dock and Old Town Liverpool are two of the city’s most essential visitor destinations — and they are separated by only a 15-minute walk along one of Britain’s most historically rich waterfronts.

The Albert Dock: Context

The Albert Dock, opened in 1846, is a UNESCO-nominated complex of dock warehouses that represents Victorian engineering and commercial ambition at its most impressive. Today it houses the Tate Liverpool, the International Slavery Museum, the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the Beatles Story — four major cultural attractions in one complex. It is Liverpool’s most visited tourist destination.

Walking from the Albert Dock to the Old Town

From the Albert Dock, walk north along the waterfront past the Three Graces and the Pier Head. Turn inland up Water Street — you are now on one of Liverpool’s oldest commercial streets, heading directly towards Liverpool Town Hall. The 15-minute walk takes you from the industrial heritage of the docks through the Edwardian civic grandeur of the Pier Head into the Georgian and Victorian commercial architecture of the Old Town.

What to See Along the Way

The route from the Albert Dock to the Old Town passes some of Liverpool’s most significant architecture: the Albert Dock warehouses, the Museum of Liverpool at Mann Island, the Three Graces at the Pier Head, and then the series of historic commercial buildings on Water Street leading to the Town Hall junction.

Combining Both in a Day

A standard Liverpool day combines the Albert Dock’s cultural attractions in the morning with a walk up to the Old Town for lunch and afternoon exploration. The combination provides a comprehensive introduction to the city’s history, architecture and culture.
