Castle Street Liverpool: History of the City’s Most Historic Avenue

Castle Street is the backbone of Old Town Liverpool — a street that has witnessed every chapter of the city’s history, from medieval castle to Georgian banking quarter to 21st-century bar and restaurant destination.

From Castle to Commerce

The street takes its name from Liverpool Castle, a medieval fortification built around 1235 that stood at the junction of Castle Street and Water Street. The castle was one of the defining structures of early Liverpool, serving as a military garrison and administrative centre. It was demolished in 1726, but its name lives on in the street that led to its gates.

The Georgian Banking Quarter

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Castle Street became Liverpool’s premier financial address. Banks, insurance houses and legal chambers lined both sides of the street, their imposing stone facades projecting stability and prosperity. Many of these buildings survive today, giving Castle Street one of the finest concentrations of Georgian and early Victorian commercial architecture in northern England.

Notable Buildings on Castle Street

The street is home to several architecturally significant buildings. The former Bank of England building (now a Wetherspoons pub) is a Grade II listed neoclassical structure of impressive scale. The Municipal Buildings at the top of the street were built in the 1860s to house Liverpool’s expanding city government. Together, these buildings create an architectural ensemble of considerable power.

Castle Street Today

Today, Castle Street is one of Liverpool’s most popular dining and drinking destinations. Restaurants, bars and cafés occupy the ground floors of many historic buildings, creating a lively urban environment that balances heritage and contemporary city life. The street hosts outdoor events in summer and is a focal point for Liverpool’s food and drink scene.
