It is one of the seven original streets of Liverpool — laid out by royal order of King John in 1207, when the city was granted its charter and the first streets were planned in the shape of a double cross. High Street was the crossbar. It was originally called “Juggler Street” — named for the street performers and entertainers who gathered here in medieval times. Liverpool’s first Town Hall was recorded on this very street in 1515. Its first Custom House stood here. And when the current Town Hall was built between 1749 and 1754 — described as “one of the finest surviving 18th-century town halls” in England — it was built directly adjacent to where Casa Buone stands today. “The merchants preferred to transact business in the street outside.” — On the original Town Hall, 1754 For three centuries, this corner was where shipowners, merchants, insurers and lawyers gathered — not inside buildings, but in the street itself.
