Getting to Liverpool Old Town: Transport and Directions Guide
Liverpool Old Town is easily accessible by public transport and on foot from all of the city’s main transport hubs. This guide covers all the main ways to reach the historic city centre.
By Train
Liverpool has two main rail terminals — Liverpool Lime Street (for inter-city services and Merseyrail) and Liverpool Central (for Merseyrail). From Liverpool Lime Street, the Old Town is approximately a 10-minute walk: walk down Lime Street past St George’s Hall, turn left onto William Brown Street and then south onto Dale Street, which leads directly into the heart of the Old Town. From Liverpool Central, walk along Church Street and then north to reach the Old Town.
By Car and Parking
Driving into Liverpool city centre is not recommended during peak hours. Several multi-storey car parks are available within walking distance of the Old Town, including the Q-Park on King Edward Street and the NCP on Moorfields. On-street parking in the Old Town itself is extremely limited. Many visitors prefer to park at an out-of-town Merseyrail station and take the train in.
By Bus
Several bus routes serve the Old Town area. The main bus stops on Dale Street and Castle Street connect the Old Town to the wider Liverpool bus network and to the surrounding metropolitan area.
On Foot from Key Points
From the Albert Dock: 15 minutes walking north along the waterfront, then up Water Street. From Liverpool ONE shopping centre: 10 minutes walking north through the city centre. From Mathew Street: 5 minutes walking west. From the Pier Head: 10 minutes walking up Water Street.
